How do I use FFP2 masks?

 

These face masks are easy to use and can be worn by anyone. To fit, simply hold the mask and place it over your nose and mouth. Bring both elasticated headbands over your head and adjust the position until it’s comfortable. 

The bottom elasticated headband should sit at the nape of your neck and the top elasticated headband should sit just above the crest of your head (the widest part).

The masks are comfortable to wear as they are lightweight and non-bulky.

 

Are the masks re-usable?

These masks are not marketed as re-usable masks because they are considered dust masks are usually intended for use in a construction environment.

However, the OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) directive indicates that a mouth mask can be reused as long as it "maintains its structural and functional integrity and the filter material is not physically damaged or soiled".

Face Masks for Coronavirus

What type of face mask is good against the corona virus, also known as the covid-19 or Wuhan virus? According to medical expo, FFP2/N95 masks are currently being used to help protect against being infected with the corona virus.

FFP2/N95 masks have a minimum of 94% filtration percentage and maximum 8% leakage to the inside. They are mainly used in construction, agriculture, and by healthcare professionals against influenza viruses. They are currently used for protection against the coronavirus.

These face masks are either valved or unvalved filtering masks that are recommended when protection of the respiratory system is needed.

They are FFP2 grade (N95 equivalent) and meet the guidance from the World Health Organisation (WHO). They are recommended for use by the WHO during outbreaks of SARS, Avian Flu and Coronavirus.

 

FFP2 vs N95 vs KN95

All respirator masks are graded based on how much protection they offer. Each country has a different grading system for the equivalent masks. FFP2 is the UK/EU version, N95 is the US version and KN95 is the version used in China.

All these masks offer the same level of protection and they protect against materials at concentrations up to 12x OEL or 10x APF (assigned protection factor).

What does a fit test involve?

Fit-testing typically takes 30 minutes and comprises qualitative fit-testing (testing whether the wearer can taste an intensely bitter or sweet substance sprayed into the ambient air) or quantitative fit testing (measuring the ratio of particles in the air inside and outside the breathing zone when wearing the respirator).

Fit testing is a “formal” test required, performed by an accredited individual, prior to the first wear of a respirator. Fit checking or seal checking is “good practice”, performed by the wearer every time a respirator is donned to ensure a good seal.

I have put on my mask and still have gaps?

Respirators come in different shapes, sizes, and designs. Everyone’s face shape is different and there is no “one size fits all” for any type of respirator. Research shows that for any one of three widely used respirators, a satisfactory fit could be achieved by less than 50% of healthcare workers tested, and for 28% of the participants none of the masks gave a satisfactory fit.

Given the scarce supply of non-counterfeit respirators, a risk assessment should be carried out to determine whether wearing a mask which may have some gaps, along with additional PPE such as a visor is suitable for the given situation. It should be noted that adjustments can be made to respirators which may allow for a suitable fit. This can be discussed with the fit tester.
